BCCI's and Sharad Pawar's monopoly in the Indian Cricket has definitely been shaken up by the Indian Cricket League. Their counter move which seems to have been a brain child of BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah is to come up with its own Professional Cricket League.
Apparently this Professional League has been brewing for almost 10 years. One would not be surprised if it takes BCCI 10 years to come up with a decision. Interestingly this decision comes up after Indian Cricket League's (ICL) launch early part of this year. BCCI has tried all possible roadblocks that their think bench could come up with. Only if they had focused their time more constructively towards development of the game, things would have been quite different today. An organization that has been ridiculed for bureaucracy, corruption, mismanagement, and false promises is ironically the premier body that represents the interests of nation's favorite pass time. Staying true to its colors, BCCI's role with the league will be very questionable. If you remember, BCCI had criticized Indian Cricket League's 20-over format couple of months ago, saying that a 20-over format will bring no good to the game. So why now, only a few months later have BCCI floated its own private league. BCCI should recognize ICL and embrace the competition. Only good things will come out of it, young and dynamic cricketers will be given an opportunity to show case their talent. Both leagues should be allowed to trade players with one other. Both Leagues should invest money into grass root level, improving the cricketing infrastructure in the country. And at the end of the day the National team should be able pick the very best players from either of the leagues. Players that are not performing, for whatever reasons, can be rotated back into these leagues as they get another chance to improve their game, while the very best keep representing the country. So BCCI, lets embrace completion, after all, it is THE force that drives a healthy economy and serves the people interests. IndianCricketLeague staff writer - Sharad September 3rd, 2007
