Mumbai: Kiran ‘Jockey’ More, India’s stumper for nearly eight years is pleased with the national committee’s fearless decision to take Indian cricket ahead by naming Mahendra Singh Dhoni captain for 13 matches featuring seven one-day internationals against Australia, a Twenty20 match and five ODIs against Pakistan.

The dapper wicketkeeper, who played in 49 Tests and 94 one-day internationals said: “India doesn’t need a make-shift captain. It will Image be a tough call for Dhoni. But make no mistake, Dhoni is a very strong guy, he has the knack to take pressure and conserve energy. Moreover his reading of the game is brilliant,” said More. A key member of the Indian Cricket League (ICL) Board and previously a Chairman of the selection committee for four years, More played his part in recognising Dhoni’s talent.

“A wicketkeeper’s mind is always on the game and hence he is the best man on the field to advice tips to the bowlers, batsmen and the fielders,” said More, adding that he enjoyed his tenure as captain of Baroda for five years, West Zone and other teams in the BCCI’s domestic competition.

Further explaining the role of the wicketkeeper, he said: “People say wicketkeeping is a thankless job, I would say it’s a tough job. But once you succeed, you are the champion. Myself and Greg Chappell always felt that Dhoni had the potential to become India’s captain. It’s not going to be easy for him, but he can prove a lot of people wrong. He should be given a long rope to prove himself, something similar to the appointment of Rahul (Dravid) for a year and more. Dhoni may not prove to be an overnight wonder, he should be given time to settle down.”

More is favourable towards developing a young captain in the course of a team building process.
